This is the start of a new weekly series on my blog. Sunday Thought may include a quote, a thought, something to think about. Basically, I may include whatever has stood out for me and that I think might resonate with my readers, too.
I saw this quote on Twitter. It is a refreshing antidote to the well-intentioned but sometimes irritating quotes that tell us to cheer up.
Life isn’t a competition: all emotions, whether happy or sad, are relative and subjective.
Saying someone can’t be sad because someone else may have it worse is like saying someone can’t be happy because someone else might have it better.
If you have any quotes or thoughts worth sharing, please do get in touch.
Great idea for a regular feature and I LOVE that quote, I haven’t seen it before but it’s so true. Thanks for sharing it.

such a good quote! I have ben hit up with “everyone has their own struggles” when I’m jealous of someone’s situation. And my jealousy is really rooted in sadness, so when someone tries to get me to see another’s issues, it often comes across as very invalidating towards my own feelings. This quote is just too perfect. thank you for sharing!

I’m glad it was helpful for you, Meghan. No one should ever invalidate your feelings xxx

Great idea for a series and fab quote. My mum is dreadful for this, nobody else is ever allowed to be sad because her life is so much worse! Gets on my nerves!!!! x

I haven’t seen this quote before but it’s just perfect. Of course, it shouldn’t matter how happy or sad someone is, merely that they are. “Sorry, Madam, I’ve evaluated your level of sadness, and you’re just not quite sad enough for me to care …” I look forward to future instalments in the series.

Ha! Thanks Tim. I do know some people who thrive on drama, and seem to act according to some sort of invisible points system…crazy. We shouldn’t overthink these things. We should focus on helping those we care about when they are sad, and celebrating with them when they are happy x

Couldn’t agree more with this. We had a horrendous year in 2014 and this week has been pretty crappy too. One of my friends rang me to moan about something and then ended her little rant by saying, “Sorry you don’t need to hear all this you have your own stuff going on and mine isn’t even that important.” But that’s how she was feeling at the time and it was obviously enough to make her ring me. I said the same thing to her, it’s all relative and she is always free to moan at me about anything, whenever. Xx

Thanks Franki. Sorry to read you’ve been having a tough time. That anecdote is right, all things are relative and subjective – it’s really not a competition xxx

Lovely idea for a series and I think the quotation is spot on. I’ve been listening to Radio 2 a lot recently (because I am old) and they have a pause for thought every day and, even though it is by people of different religious faiths (where I have none), I find it really interesting discovering the ways people see things.

Thanks Tara. If you are old because you listen to R2, then so am I! I like the pause for thought too, particularly that they have leaders from all different faiths but the thought isn’t religious – well, I suppose it’s down to your individual interpretation. x

What a brilliant idea for a regular post. That quotation is so true and I completely agree with it. Sadness, like happiness, is all relative and you only ever experience your own. Hugs Mrs H xxxx

Yes – you can only ever know how you feel. It is never appropriate to judge another’s emotions. Thank you, Mrs H xxx
