If you go down to the river today, you’re in for a big surprise…
For some years now, people have been planting large stuffed animals on an island in the river in Bedford. Variously, there has been an orang-utan, lion, tiger, hippo, crocodile, monkey and a penguin. This incongruous menagerie lives happily side-by-side with the ducks, geese and the currently-nesting swans.
Seeing the animals and wondering if any new ones have been added is one of my main pleasures of a walk along the river.
Some people, however, seem to be completely in their own headspace and miss them completely. So, next time you’re headed along the Embankment, go and see the town’s very own free mini-zoo.
